36%, 60%, and Wrong Ref Makes Call

You are not going to win too many games at any level, CYO, High School, College, NBA when you shoot only 36% and only make 60% of your free throws. You have to do your best with things you can control and not leave it up to the refs. This was self-induced unfortunately. That was not a very good team and it took one of their kids having his wet dream game to score almost half their points to beat us by only 1 with us shooting that bad.

From the first games this year and the Arkansas game at Moody the group we go to games with all came to the same conclusion months ago. We didn't value the basketball or possessions enough, and were not consistent enough on our free throws. That never changed during the season and it bit us yesterday. Make a few free throws, you don't have to be 100%, but just 75% and you win.

However, my uncle who was head of Midwest officials association and has worked all over Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, etc. with his crews and even fills in on some Big 10 games called me last night. He said official that made the call right by the bench is not the one to do so and that's not his responsibility. He said court is supposed to be divided in thirds and they each have specific areas to focus on. On that play the call is primarily the under the basket guys call, then the guy nearest the shooter or ball.

Not saying the call right or wrong, and again that is not why game was lost (we did it to ourselves), but the guy who made the call is not the one who should have even been thinking about calling it as he should have been focused on other things. My uncle also told me the focus for the rule is supposed to be on if the ball has a chance to go in the basket because there are so many air balls that occur like others have pointed out.

Definitely self inflicted, free-throws, rebounding (we never lose in that category) late-turnover and lack of defensive energy for the first 2/3's of the game. With that being said it never feels good when the ref makes the call at the end a game to determine a winner. I am gonna be hurting from this one for a while.
