Probation doesn't sound so bad until you realize this was the most serious act SACS could select short of simply revoking UNC's accreditation. Key quote:

"It's a big deal," said Belle Whelan, SACS president. "This issue was bigger than anything with which we’ve ever dealt, and it went on for longer than anything else. This is the first one I can recall in the 10 years I’ve been here that we put an institution on probation for academic fraud or academic integrity."

Maybe the comment by the SACS person is right and its a Big Done year eal as reported by Dukie

But one year probation for something described as worst ever and that went on for more than a decade especially when the recent history (2013) is that they did not come clean?

Phooey.

I suppose this does keep the accrediting body from having to deal to deal with an appeal which would probably have happened had a longer penalty been handed down.

You didn't read the details. One or two years of probation were the only options, and one year is more onerous than two because accreditation probation is simply the deadline by which the school must show all issues are resolved.

Wow, what next? Double secret probation?

If out and out academic fraud for over a decade doesn't get UNC the accreditation boot, then nothing will.

The only thing more disgusting is this nothing burger of a 'penalty' is about a thousand times more severe than what the NCAA will dish out.

Roy Williams reward.....

“@GoodmanESPN: UNC announces two-year contract extension for Roy Williams, Through 2019-20 season. Much of it designed to help with recruiting.”

If the AAU (Association of American Universities) starts pulling their membership, that would be a big thing since some conferences require it (obviously not the ACC with VT, Louisville, Clemson, and FSU).

You are absolutely correct. Nothing will. Not going to happen to a big state school. Ever.
