I randomly ran across a tweet from Elsey that one of the NBA guys I follow retweeted. According to his bio he's now a divorce attorney in DFW. For those too young to remember, Elsey was a guard from Flower Mound who played his first two years at SMU (97-99) and could flat out shoot from deep. He started every game his sophomore year averaging 13 pts. Then he transferred to Baylor but I can't remember why.

@juryverdicts: @JordanBrenner had Mavs not whiffed on Rondo deal they'd have picks to make moves. Ur even more right

Wasn't he caught up in the Bliss tornado? The way I remember it, it came out that Bliss had promised to get Elsey into Baylor's law school and find ways to pay for it if he would transfer. I think it was one of the violations he was accused of, just didn't get as much press as covering up murder.

That all sounds correct.

I remember Elsey. I think he made a game winning shot at the WAC tournament one year.

You are probably thinking of the game against UNLV in Las Vegas for first place about 2/3rds through the season. SMU trailed all game, but stayed close. SMU was down by two with the ball and just a few seconds. Sasser tried to drive in and make a shot but was nearly tied up. In mid air, he was able to kick it over to Elsey who was open in the corner. He drained the three at the buzzer for the win.

Was the high point of the season. SMU was considered a near lock to make the big dance, then of course things went to hell, we ended up in the NIT, lost in the first round on the road, and had players breaking curfew and having sex with cheerleaders with hints of assault (which never got far, law enforcement deemed it consensual). Fun Times!

We don't tend to get the nod on "near locks".

Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking of. Obviously I'm a little foggy on the details, but I remember Elsey hitting that shot from the corner and I remember that it was in Las Vegas.

Isn't that the year we beat UNLV three times?

Didn't the incident with the players happen at the conference tournament?

I thought it was NIT, but could be wrong, we lost in first round of both of those, so maybe I am confused.

That year was full of hope. . . and ended up a colossal disappointment.

Correct. It happened out in Fresno I believe, after another first round loss. So then the NIT appearance (at Southwest Missouri St?) was heavily clouded by the allegations from Fresno, and was yet another first round loss.

Yea, it was In Vegas vs UNLV. Deep corner 3 as time ran out. A bunch of us were there, great times at Thomas & Mack. Was also at the tourney in Fresno which was the worst. Hawaii just lit us up, total no show. That night about 10 rooms down from me, the cheerleader baller train happened.

Pretty much how I heard it went down from various folks. I was amazed at how supportive the student body was for those teams.

Elsey says Bliss promised aid for law school

WACO, Texas -- A former Baylor University basketball player
has filed a lawsuit claiming former coach Dave Bliss broke a
promise to help the athlete get into law school and to pay for it.

Chad Elsey is seeking more than $100,000 in damages -- including
the cost of tuition and books for another law school -- from Bliss
and Baylor. Elsey, who is representing himself, filed the breach of
contract suit Monday in Waco.
