The big lesson in this is that athletes have to be really careful about the people that come into their lives. This situation would have never come up if Laremy's mother hadn't married an abusive waste of flesh that was only in it because Tunsil's eventually going to get first round NFL money... once the scumbag got into that altercation with Tunsil's mother and Tunsil pulled him away from her, dude realized that his chances of getting anything out of Tunsil had just gone to zero... so, he did what any scumbag with nothing to lose does in that situation - try to ruin things for the person he was trying to leach off of.

Not saying that accepting those benefits wasn't wrong... just that it shouldn't have ever come out. This kind of stuff happens in every SEC, Big XII, Pac12, etc town and nothing ever comes of it because it never gets out.

Was Ole Miss even under investigation? The allegation made by the father who met and was interviewed by the NCAA said the father testified to improper benefits offered by "agents".

Someone found this in the report.

The NCAA says he was "not completely forthcoming when initially questioned by investigators" but later "corrected his account and apologized"

again was it an investigation of a player taking extra benefits from an agent or an investigation of Ole Miss for giving extra benefits to a player

Looks like a booster was involved as well.

3 separate loaner vehicles over a six-month period without payment (provided by a dealership which is owned by a booster & former coach), a 4-month interest-free note on a $3000 down payment for purchasing a used vehicle, 2 nights of lodging at a local home, an airline ticket purchased by a friend of a teammate.

Tunsil was given a 7 game suspension this year; Ole Miss received no punishment.

From what I understand, this was entirely a result of the stepdad running to the NCAA after getting cut out of the Tunsils' lives (and the future NFL money).

The NCAA had been snooping around some minor things related to track and Houston Nutt's time at Ole Miss but apparently most of that is over. The stuff coming out of ULL the past couple of days is a bit disconcerting until you realize that it was Ole Miss that actually reported what the guy was doing to the NCAA - apparently a guy that was on the staff about 6 years ago had a whole "Plan" to get players eligible and he took his little freakshow independent and got some players qualified at MSU, Alabama, and ULL through some shady means (his plan revolves around getting borderline athletes diagnosed with learning disabilities and then gaming the system with untimed ACT tests administered by a friendly proctor at a certain high school and online courses).

apparently, NCAA Bylaws now refer to that as "post enrollment prize money" as opposed to a "pre-enrollment recruiting inducement". May not like it but the NCAA has set up standards for different categories of violations with general ranges of punishment. If anything the kids punishment is harsher than the general NCAA standards for "post enrollment prize money".

"NCAA bylaws judge the severity of what it calls “post-enrollment prize money” on a sliding scale based on how much money is involved. For benefits valued at $100 or less, the athlete can simply repay the money with no further penalty. For benefits valued from $100 to $400, the penalty is repayment plus a suspension for 10 percent of his or her team’s regular-season games in the subsequent season. From $400 to $700, the suspension increases to 20 percent of games; above $700, the suspension increases to 30 percent of games. In a 12-game football season, that comes to four games."

In practice, the NCAA has handed down only two four-game suspensions to high-profile football players in the past five years, both from Georgia. In 2010, A.J. Green was forced to sit out the Bulldogs’ first four games after selling a jersey for $1,000, and last year Todd Gurley was docked four games at midseason for accepting $3,000 in cash over two years in exchange for autographs. In both of those cases, the NCAA formally announced the duration of the suspensions and set firm return dates after the first game served.

If necessary, the bylaws also give the reinstatement staff the authority to turn the screws a little tighter if it sees fit (emphasis added):

“
In addition, in cases where the impermissible prize money greatly exceeds $700, the committee directed the reinstatement staff to consider whether additional withholding, including permanent ineligibility, is appropriate.

I'm glad you pointed this case out to me though. Now I know that the NCAA has renamed the "$20 Handshake" to "post enrollment prize money". But it also points out what I have said, the NCAA, for better or worse, treats "academic fraud" and "pre-enrollment recruiting inducements" much more harshly than than "post enrollment prize money" which I agree with 100%. Looks like reasonable standards to impose relatively uniform punishment. Makes sense to me-what about you?

So post enrollment prize money is not as bad an infraction as pre enrollment inducement money? So you just tell the recruits, hey - right after you enroll we will be rewarding you with some regular cash prize money. Welcome to OL Miss!!

technically and practically yeah
but legally no-the offer (inducement) in your example was made before enrollment and therefore is a pre-enrollment recruiting inducement especially if the school followed up as "offered". Offer + Acceptance or Action in conformity with agreement legally creates a contract ex. "once you sign that letter of intent I'll buy you a Trans Am" is a recruiting inducement but "if you come to Ole Miss you'll be taken care of" is probably too vague to enforce

So if you're going to cheat, best to outsource it to boosters who have made their money and will spend it however they damn well please.. After enrollment. Word gets around without having to promise up front
