With Larry Brown suspended, Tim Jankovich takes over for disheartened SMU

Scott Gleeson, USA TODAY Sports

Southern Methodist men's basketball coach Larry Brown spends his October days on and off campus — on the road recruiting and in the gym running practices, just like he has for the past three seasons. He'll do so until SMU's first game of the regular season, when his nine-game NCAA suspension begins. Then Brown isn't allowed to have any contact with his players until Dec. 18, a punishment he calls "mind boggling."

Tim Jankovich, SMU's associate head coach, spends his October days studying film and often running team meetings. He takes the lead on scouting reports and runs practices when Brown's away recruiting.

The way senior point guard Nic Moore sees it, "We've got two head coaches."

Maybe our SID can let USA today know that when referring to our school in regard to sports it is SMU - not southern Methodist.

They refer to us as SMU everywhere except at the beginning of a sentence, which is proper writing style.

Nic gives no indication he is leaving. Just the opposite.

Nice article. I found Larry's quote about the guys not having the chance to transfer interesting.

There is another staff member saying the same thing about seniors not being able to leave. I have no idea what to believe

Do you think that LB while suspended will break down film of other teams and make suggestions to Jank?

If he doesn't, someone should ask for some money back. Having him dissect film all day is invaluable.

In the article, it seems to say that SMU will not be included in any polls...How can the NCAA control polling ,las vegas odds, etc.

I talked to someone "close" to the program this weekend. He said he believes while Markus and Nic are pissed there will be no dance, they have a bigger dream and goal in their own mind. They believe they can play in the NBA (or at least over seas) and the best way for them to achieve that goal is to play hard and win now.

He doesn't think they will transfer (unless this season falls flat fast), he thinks they believe playing hard under Larry gets them closer to their life long dream.
