Game thoughts

Postby LA_Mustang » Sun Nov 15, 2015 11:16 am

I was impressed with the attendance. It's always dangerous to assume anything when it comes to SMU fan support but last night showed me a lot. Moody was 90% full five minutes in against Sam Houston St. With it being a Saturday and a ton of important football games going on the attendance was great. Plus, the former President and First Lady cared enough to show up for a game against SHS.

It was also a nice showing by the students. As Stallion mentioned in another post, their sections were full and they were scattered out in other sections. It was a tough game to really get into and the one time the students were about to go off the game day production failed big time but let's keep this positive. That's beating a dead horse.

As for the team, I'm not sure how you can not be excited. Back in LB's first year I went to a few practices and got to see the new transfer guys play. It didn't take long to see that Nic and MK were different. They were confident and talented. That is exactly the same feeling I got watching this current freshman class practice. Now that I've seen them play against real competition, it's pretty obvious. These are high quality elite players. Sed has had a rough start but he'll come around. The talent is there. Shake is as gifted a scorer as we've signed since I've followed the program. He's got to work on his defense but the sky is the limit for the young man. I'm still shocked by Jarrey. As with any freshman, he'll make mistakes but he does everything on the court - shoot, drive, defend, rebound and he plays with confidence. There's a reason I had heard LB loves him. He is going to be a great player for us.

Ben Moore, wow. I'm not sure who told him over the summer to be more aggressive but keep it coming. If he keeps playing this way we are going to be tough to stop. He was hitting that jumper from the top of the key all night. Sterling was just being Sterling - solid and effective. Nic has to be so relieved he doesn't feel like he has to score every time down the court now.

It will be interesting to see how we play against a big, physical team like Stanford on the road. Tolbert, MK and Ben will have to avoid foul trouble. It will be a good early test but there's no reason to believe we won't be ready.

I know that Shake looked lost at times on defense but there were also times when he played very good defense. Just needs to be more consistent on that end of the floor.

I liked what I saw last night. This business of "Moody Magic" will continue for years (suck it NCAA). I am amazed at the potential of the new boys. It was great to be back in Moody last night.

We get punched in the gut a lot following SMU athletics but a trip to Moody watching our guys hoop makes it all worthwhile. Moody is a special place. I was told the tv announcers were going on and on about Moody. Was the game on ESPN3?

yeah - some additional thoughts...

1) This team has every reason to not stick together, and they seem really tight. That is really something, and that has to be coaching, plus a very mature and appreciative Nic Moore. The family thing is not just talk

2) Keith played really well I thought. He is always a bit over the top on offense and can have defensive laps - but he showed more aggressiveness, and really showed his athleticism, and when he goes off on a team it is really fun to watch.

3) We have lots of talent that did not even hit the floor (Gu, Semi and Sed). We have guard play that will just be overwhelming for most teams. Lots of match up options for Larry down the road.

4) We are going to be really challenged on fouls and personnel regarding our inside game. Hope MK is in the classroom, because we cant lose anyone and compete vs any solid team. Our rebound numbers are not not going to be there with a bigger team.

5) Lots of competing events on this Saturday night and the opponent was not exciting, so really good turn out by all - particularly students. Beer in moody is a beautiful thing.

6). Its been said and no need to overdo this - but someone in athletics needs to get a grip on the game day. If our 1st year guy is in Cinn, lets just pay him to come back. Throw some money at this. It is too important to not get it right.

7) Opening video needs to be replaced. Its just not up to par.

8) If you are an unhappy big guy with talent anywhere in the country, you should be thinking about transferring to SMU - and hurry up. To step into this group of guards next year would be heaven. We need three of them.

Really exciting start - we need to stick with this team the way they are sticking with each other.

Good points, gostangs.

1) I meant to bring up the family thing in my original post. How many schools have all their recent grads come to the opener? Also, when Shake went on his little scoring run no one in the arena was celebrating more than MK & Nic.
2) he needs to quit passing up the open 3. He did it several times.
3) adding Semi will be huge.
4) we are going to have to create matchup problems for the other teams. Use small ball to our advantage.
5) beer is good.
6) the fact that it hasn't been addressed tells me it won't be. It is definitely taking away from our home court advantage.
7) I'm hoping it was just to honor last year's team. They need to find a better song. The one two years ago set the bar very high.
8 ) my guess is Froling and a JUCO.

The security guard at the SHSU side of the 112 Mob section had the gall to try to tell the students they needed to sit down during the game so the visiting fans could see the game. Needless to say we told her that this was our arena and not theirs, and that we would not be taking her suggestions under advisement.

You should email Rick Hart and make him aware of that. No way should security ever ask our students to sit down. That's totally unacceptable.

Definitely!

That is just ridiculous. How can stuff like this still be happening?

Already done. Hopefully he will respond as well as let the security staff know that they should never tell SMU students at an SMU home game that they can't stand up.
