SMU out-scores Titans, 27-10 in the fourth to claim second victory

DALLAS (SMU) – Alicia Froling recorded her third double-double of the season, and four Mustangs scored at least 10 points as SMU took down Cal State Fullerton, 74-53, at Moody Coliseum on day one of the Thanksgiving Classic Friday night. SMU shot 51.7 percent from the field, 30-of-58, while holding the Titan offense to a season-low 27.8 percent from the field.

The Mustangs (2-2) out-scored Cal State Fullerton 27-10 in the fourth quarter to break the game open and take the victory. Cal State Fullerton came out of the halftime break trailing 33-24, but went on a 9-0 run to even the game at 33 apiece. Adams snapped the run and answered with a 3-pointer to give the Mustangs a 36-33 lead with just over six minutes to play in the third. The two teams juggled the lead entering the final two minutes, before Froling recorded three points and Adams sank a free throw to round off the period and expand the Mustang lead by four, 47-43.

Cal State Fullerton (2-4) hit a 3-pointer at the start of the fourth quarter, cutting the SMU lead to one, 47-46. The Mustang offense responded, going on a 22-5 run over the next eight minutes to take a 68-51 lead with just under two minutes to play. Froling led the Mustangs with seven points and five rebounds in the final 10 minutes, shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from the field, 1-for-1 from outside the 3-point arc.

Froling, a Queensland, Australia, native led the Mustangs with 20 points and 10 rebounds, going 9-for-12 from the field, while McKenzie Adams scored 15 points and recorded a career-high nine assists. Stephanie Collins finished with 11 point and four rebounds, and Morgan Bolton finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

SMU opened the game outscoring Cal State Fullerton in the opening 10 minutes to take an 18-7 lead. Junior guard Bolton led the Mustangs, recording seven points with four rebounds, shooting a perfect 2-for-2 from outside the 3-point arc.

The Titans made a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter, trying to cut into the lead, but were just two points closer when the half ended than when the quarter started, trailing 33-24 at halftime. Froling, the 6-3 post, led the Mustangs at the break with 10 points and four rebounds.

The Mustangs round off their season-opening homestand Saturday, at 5 p.m. in the Thanksgiving Classic Championship game against the winner between Northern Illinois and Kansas.

Drills Cal State Fullerton? Was Cal State some kind of powerhouse or something?

Apparently not, just saw where they were 13-19 last year.
