Mustangs Fall To No. 11 Texas A&M, 67-55
Froling ties the SMU single-game rebound record, finishes with her fifth double-double of the season

Dec. 7, 2015

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (SMU) – Alicia Froling tied an SMU single-game record with 21 rebounds, tied for second in the American Athletic Conference, and scored 14 points for her 10th career double-double in a 67-55 loss for the SMU women’s basketball team at No. 11 Texas A&M in Reed Arena Monday.

Froling, a 6-3 forward, was one of three Mustangs (3-5) to score in double figures as the sophomore posted her fifth double-double of the season. She matched Felicia Bluitt and Christine Elliott, who finished with 21 rebounds in a game in 1986 and 2009, respectively. Ashley Gibson led the Mustangs with 17 points and four 3-pointers, while McKenzie Adams finished with 12 points, going 2-of-6 from behind the 3-point arc.

Trailing 41-28 at halftime, SMU out-scored Texas A&M (6-2), 20-14 in the third quarter. Trailing 52-35 with 3:35 left in the third quarter, SMU found a spark late and used a 13-3 run over in the final minutes to cut the deficit and end the quarter, 55-48. Both teams traded jumpers early in the fourth quarter, before the Aggies went on a 6-0 run to expand the lead by 12, 65-53. SMU managed a layup to come within 10, but the Texas A&M defense shutout the Mustangs in the final three minutes to close out the game.

SMU held the Aggies to just a four-point lead, 20-16, after the opening 10 minutes. Texas A&M out-scored the Mustangs 21-12 in the second quarter to take a 41-28 halftime lead. Gibson, a Butler CC transfer, finished the first half leading all scorers with 14 points, going 5-for-8 from the field.

The SMU women’s basketball team will take a week and a half off for final exams before traveling to San Juan, Puerto Rico, to compete in the 2015 Puerto Rico Classic. The Mustangs will face Arizona Dec. 19 in Rubén Zayas Montañez Coliseum at 12:15 p.m. CT. SMU will take on Gardner-Webb, Dec. 20, at 2:30 p.m. CT, before finishing the tournament against No. 9 Mississippi State Dec. 21 at 12:15 CT.
