Moby [deleted], Ahab, And Recruiting KF

When I was a kid I read Moby [deleted]. It was a great fun read. But it wasn't until I became an adult that it took any real significant meaning. I recall when I was in my 20s, a senior partner in my law firm saying to a 30ish partner, something you the effect of, "you are just like Ahab in f#$%ing Moby [deleted]. You won't be happy til we all go down with the ship." That's probably when it really hit me what Moby [deleted] was really about.

In Moby [deleted], Melville wrote the following line: "All visible objects, man, are but as pasteboard masks."

The visible object in this case, was KF. He was our white whale. He was something SMU wanted/needed/desired and we took a tremendous risk in pursuing him. I'm not being critical of the decision by the coaching staff. I'm merely stating that the inherent risks were all visible and known. What drives us to risk so much?

In Moby [deleted], Ahab risked the lives and humanity of all those around him in search of his quest. The white whale represented something he felt he needed to conquer. Our innate desire to achieve, conquer and overcome, whether for good or bad, drives us to often times put others in danger.

For LB and SMU, the danger signs were there from the outset. But we (LB/SMU) pursued him. Unlike Moby [deleted], we/SMU are still alive. So is this team. We harpooned the white whale and at the end of the day, he got away. Maybe secretly we all wanted him to get away. It doesn't matter. Today, we are all alive and our ship is still intact.

Good bye white whale. May you find calm waters and peace elsewhere. May you thrive and live a long prosperous life. As for those of us still on the ship, onward we go in search of new frontiers. We shall all retell this story for many a year.

NEver thought I'd read a literary post tied to SMU basketball.
Interesting and well done.
