FoxSports writer starts White House petition to lift SMU's

SMU's postseason ban might become a topic of discussion at Barack Obama's next presidential meeting.

OK, maybe that's going a little too far. But there is now a petition on the official petitions.whithouse.gov website calling for the NCAA to allow SMU to compete in the NCAA Tournament in March.

FoxSports.com writer Aaron Torres actually started the petition on Wednesday. His reasoning is quite simple -- the ban was too harsh and SMU is the only unbeaten team in the country.

"It's time for them (the NCAA) not only to admit their mistake, but remedy it altogether," Torres wrote. "The NCAA should lift SMU's postseason ban. It's time to allow the Mustangs to play in the NCAA Tournament. I've even started a petition. We're taking this all the way to the top."

While SMU might not have a realistic shot to take down the NCAA with Torres' petition, it is worth noting that Obama is a huge college basketball fan. Just saying.

any ideas for getting this out to a wider audience? Anyone who hates the NCAA should love this - and that is quite a few.

If we could only use our old pony fans online voting protocols 98k would only take about a half day.

At the very least I hope that Obama gets asked about it when he does his annual unveiling of his bracket. That would be some nice publicity.

Can President Obama Get SMU Into the NCAA March Madness Tournament?

No. No, he can’t. But that hasn’t stopped enthusiastic SMU basketball fans from filing a petition with the White House calling for the Mustangs to be allowed to participate in the NCAA men’s basketball championship tournament.

SMU’s team is undefeated this season and ranked 8th in the country, so they would be a shoe-in to be selected to participate in the tournament. Only thing is, the school was banned last fall from postseason play for academic fraud and ethical misconduct.

The White House has a policy stating that it must respond to any petition that collects at least 100,000 signatures. Right now the SMU effort still needs more than 97,000.

But, again, there’s nothing Obama is going to be able to do for the Ponies. Feel free to post in the comments below about how this situation would be different if we had an effective leader like Vladimir Putin in the Oval Office.
