SMU Will Be No. 7 Seed For American Athletic Conference Tournament
Alicia Froling Set the SMU single-season rebound record

GREENVILLE, N.C. (SMU) – In the final basketball game of the 2015-16 regular season, the SMU women’s basketball team fell to East Carolina, 78-61, Monday in Minges Coliseum. The Mustangs fall to 12-17 overall and 7-11 in American Athletic Conference action, while the Pirates improve to 12-18, 6-12 in The American.

Alicia Froling set the SMU single-season rebound record (311) with six rebounds in the regular-season finale. The 6-3 sophomore passed Shasta Smothers-Johnson, who set the previous record during the 1984-85 season. Froling has recorded 528 career rebounds.

Three Mustangs recorded double-digit scoring performances, led by Stephanie Collins and McKenzie Adams, who each scored 14 points. Adams converted 8-of-8 free-throw attempts, while grabbing two rebounds and tallying a team-high four assists. The sophomore has finished in double figures 24 times this season, including the last eight games. Collins shot 6-for-8 from the field and had four rebounds, two assists and one block. Froling finished with 10 points, going 5-for-8 from the field. Morgan Bolton finished with eight points and three rebounds, while Dai’ja Thomas finished with seven points, seven rebounds and four steals.

As a team, the Mustangs outshot ECU by four 44.0-40.0 from the field. This is the eighth time this season SMU has shot at least 40 percent.

The SMU women’s basketball team will be the No. 7 seed in the 2016 American Athletic Conference tournament and take on UCF Friday at 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

SMU was outscored by one point in the second half, 33-32, despite shooting 54.2 percent from the field and holding ECU to 29.4 percent in the final 20 minutes. The Mustangs went 13-for-24 from the field in the final two quarters, and grabbed 17 of their 36 total rebounds.

After being outscored 21-15 in the opening ten minutes, the Mustangs used a 7-2 run early in the second quarter to cut the deficit to one, 23-22. The Pirates extinguished the SMU threat with a 12-0 run to expand its lead, before taking a 47-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
