Good quick takes from the Memphis newspaper. My favorite one:
4. It's an astonishing bit of good fortune for everyone involved. It's good for Memphis, good for Pastner, and good for the fans who want to love and support their basketball program again. Pastner did a lot of fine things his first five years in the job. But the last two years have been miserable. And next year was shaping up to be more miserable still.

I never knew GT was such an unattractive destination for coaches. What else can explain their interest in Pastner?

Done deal. This week.
I think they are leaning towards Penny Hardaway.

I would rather have Lil' Penny Hardaway.
I can't for the life of me get the coding to work.

If the NCAA would do their job, Rick Pitino and Roy Williams might be available

Wasn't it the GT AD who was head of the NCAA tourney selection committee the year we got hosed? This is darn near payback.

It was Wake. Happily, they continue sucking at both major sports.

Too many firings and expensive buyouts looking back a few years. Major donors tapped out.

Still paying buyouts for last two coaches.

I don't see any change in the trend ahead.

Good. The conference needs Memphis to be good.
The Memphis president has come out and said that it is going to cost the U of M around $1.2M altogether, paid out over two years, to say good-bye to Josh. If that's the case whomever was able to sell Josh Pastner to a friggin' ACC team deserves a beer tonight.
I'm happy for Memphis, happy that Josh, a decent human being (if not coach) gets another shot to do better, and happy the damned ACC probably has a dud coming in.
Rumor is that the Witchita State coach is interested if they are willing to put up $4M. Memphis' primary booster is Bill Laurie, an ex-player who married into Walton money, and the man who was going to pay around one-half of the Pastner check had he stayed. Now that he's off the hook for that lemon he might be willing to help them out with a more proven coach.
But if Memphis gets the right guy in there they will be a national title contender again in as little as two years.
