Tubby Smith to Memphis

Texas Tech basketball coach Tubby Smith is reportedly a strong candidate for the University of Memphis' vacant head coaching position.
USA Today writer Dan Wolken tweeted this morning that Smith "is indeed someone Memphis is strongly considering for its head coaching position."
Shortly after Wolken's tweet, CBS Sports' Gary Parrish reported Smith is "now at the top of a short list of attainable candidates Memphis is considering," citing a source.
Wolken, in an early afternoon story, reported that Memphis has had "significant contact" with Smith and that the coach has told Texas Tech officials he's involved with the Tigers' search.
Wolken also wrote that "it is believed he would take an offer if it is made."
Smith, 64, has spent the last three seasons at Texas Tech. He was the head coach at Minnesota from 2007-2013, a stint in which he recruited and coached Memphis-area products Andre Hollins (White Station) and Austin Hollins (Germantown).

Memphis may not like it, but this is a pretty good hire for them. It may not be the sexiest, next-big-thing hire some want, but Tubby can coach, he will win, he will run the program cleanly, and take care of the kids. Plus, the timing of hiring someone is pretty bad. If the JP leaving thing had happened a month ago then they would have been in a better position to go after one of those coaches, but it didn't happen so they are at a disadvantage.

Good for them. I give this hire a solid B.

P.S.: Tech is going to go back to sucking. Good.

My contact here said last week he thought they may go after Tubby. He wanted Hardaway but said he would be very happy with Tubby.

Memphis is a way bett look for Tubby, but it has to kill both Memphis fan bases and Techs. Win Win

Chris Beard is the leading candidate to replace Tubby Smith at Texas Tech, source told BR. Beard has $1 million buyout in his UNLV contract.
