A Mustang lostI haven't seen any official documents or anything, but several people have told me and/or written on social media that James Gatewood, who played under John Shumate in the early 1990s, died over the weekend in Atlanta. I didn't know him well, but I remember liking him when I interviewed him. Way too young — he was 45.

Prayers for his family and friends. Derail the Frogs!
Re: A Mustang lostCondolences to the family. I hope his passing was peaceful.
Re: A Mustang lostMy favorite player when I was a student. He was the best player on our last NCAA tournament team in 1993.

Re: A Mustang lostwow. great athlete and all around good guy. had that rangy Stacy Augmon, 6'9"ish. loved watching him explode on a dunk
Re: A Mustang lostReally nice guy. He and the rest of the team at the time would play pickup games over the summer with the rest of us at Dedman.
Re: A Mustang lostMy son used to scream "James Gatewood!" when he dunked on a miniature basket we had in the back yard.
Exceptionally nice young man. My sympathies to his friends and family.
Re: A Mustang lostI saw James passing listed in the smu alum magazine which led me to this post. Very sad, what a good dude. Looks like he has 3 sons. I went to the rally link above and made a donation, it's still active if anybody still wants to help. RIP gatewood.
Re: A Mustang lostVery sad. Enjoyed watching him play. Horrible to pass so young.
