I haven't seen any official documents or anything, but several people have told me and/or written on social media that James Gatewood, who played under John Shumate in the early 1990s, died over the weekend in Atlanta. I didn't know him well, but I remember liking him when I interviewed him. Way too young — he was 45.

My favorite player when I was a student. He was the best player on our last NCAA tournament team in 1993.

Really nice guy. He and the rest of the team at the time would play pickup games over the summer with the rest of us at Dedman.

My son used to scream "James Gatewood!" when he dunked on a miniature basket we had in the back yard.
Exceptionally nice young man. My sympathies to his friends and family.

I saw James passing listed in the smu alum magazine which led me to this post. Very sad, what a good dude. Looks like he has 3 sons. I went to the rally link above and made a donation, it's still active if anybody still wants to help. RIP gatewood.

Very sad. Enjoyed watching him play. Horrible to pass so young.
