3. The AAC needs SMU to perform well in New York this week

The best way for leagues outside the top six conferences in college basketball to gain traction is to win meaningful games in November in December, and that’s exactly what the American Athletic Conference is praying happens with the Ponies on Thursday and Friday in the 2K Sports Classic.

With UConn starting out the season at 0-2 and Temple falling to New Hampshire on Monday night after a promising opening win over La Salle, the American Conference needs both SMU and Cincinnati to become major producers during the nonconference portion of the schedule.

Tim Jankovich’s squad comes to New York at 2-0 and will play Pitt on Thursday night and either Marquette or Michigan on Friday.

A pair of wins for the Ponies could do wonders for the American Conference, which already needs all the help it can get to gain legitimacy from a national perspective.

It actually feels good to be the school that has to carry the weight of the conference on its shoulders. That means we are the big dog. Let's hope we respond in kind.

Vegas has us as a 2 point favorite over Pitt. Michigan is a 1 point favorite over Marquette.

Great role to have. Now let's make good on it. This is a tough assignment.

We need to win meaningful games in November in December? Is this some sort of time-travel thing?

But I agree...let's have a strong showing.
