Mustangs Fall To No. 5 Mississippi State; Play Grambling Sunday
LOS ANGELES (SMU) – The SMU women's basketball team was unable to upset a second straight top-25 opponent, falling to No. 5 Mississippi State Friday night in the first round of the Women of Troy Classic, hosted by the University of Southern California. With the loss, the Mustangs will play Grambling Sunday at 1 p.m. CT/11 a.m. PT.
The Bulldogs improved to 11-0 this season after the 91-42 victory, while the Mustangs are now 6-4, with all four losses coming away from Moody Coliseum. Kiara Perry led SMU with 17 points, but was the only Mustang to reach double figures. Mississippi State had five players score at least 10 points, let by Blair Schaefer, who scored 18 points, going 4-for-8 on 3-point attempts.
SMU, playing its first game in 10 days after a break for final exams, plays three games in four days starting with Sunday's contest against the Lady Tigers. The Mustangs then return home to host Texas Southern Monday at 4 p.m. The non-conference schedule ends Wednesday against Seattle at 1 p.m.
