VIDEO: Women's bball wins AAC opener over Cincinnati, 64-47From SMUMustangs.com: SMU Wins American Athletic Conference Opener With 64-47 Win Against Cincinnati Dec. 31, 2016 DALLAS (SMU)— The SMU women's basketball team won its fourth straight game with a 64-47 victory at home against Cincinnati in the American Athletic Conference opener Saturday afternoon, improving to 10-4 overall and 7-0 in Moody Coliseum. Leading 33-32 at halftime, SMU went on a 10-0 run to start the second half. The Mustangs held the Bearcats scoreless from the field in the third quarter, out-scoring Cincinnati (9-5, 0-1 The American) 18-5 during the period. Alicia Froling led the offensive charge, scoring eight of the Mustangs' 10 points during the run. Devri Owens added six more, shooting 2-for-2 from behind the arc. The Mustangs held Cincinnati to just five free throws, while shooting 50 percent (6-for-12) from the field, going 2-for-2 from 3-point range, to end the period with a 14-point advantage, 51-37. Froling scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season and the 28th of her career. The junior also posted a career-high six blocks. Owens scored a career high 12 pts, shooting 4-for-5 from behind the 3-point line. Dai'ja Thomas added eight points and eight rebounds, while McKenzie Adams and Morgan Bolton scored seven points apiece. The Mustangs led by as many as seven, 15-8, with 2:19 left to play in the first quarter, shooting 40.9 percent (9-for-22) from the field, but the Bearcats fought back, cutting the Mustangs' lead to two, 21-19, at the end of the first quarter. Owens nailed a three from the wing as the shot clock expired on the first possession of the second quarter, extending the lead to five. SMU went on a 10-5 run to extend the lead back to seven, 31-24, in the second. The Mustangs outscored the Bearcats by one (13-12) in the second quarter, going 3-for-5 from behind the arc, led by Owens' two 3-pointers in the period. The Mustangs' earned their first conference opening victory since Jan. 10, 2013 at Tulane, while extending the win streak four games, the longest since the 2013-14 season, when the Mustangs advanced to the second round of the WNIT tournament. The Mustangs are now 3-0 when playing on New Year's Eve. SMU travels to Eastern Carolina to take on the Pirates Sat. Jan. 7 at 5 p.m. ET/4 p.m. CT. The road game is the first of three in a five-game stretch.
