Jankovich Named Naismith Coach of the Year Semifinalist
Jankovich Is One Of 10 National Semifinalists For The 2017 Werner Ladder Naismith Men’s College Coach of the Year Award
ATLANTA (SMU) – SMU basketball coach Tim Jankovich has been named one of 10 national semifinalists for the 2017 Werner Ladder Naismith Men's College Coach of the Year award, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Friday.
No. 14/19 SMU is 26-4 overall, and has won 12 straight and 22 of its last 23 games. SMU leads the American Athletic Conference with a 16-1 record, and has clinched at least a share of the title and the top-seed in the conference tournament. SMU is 17-0 at home this season and have won 21 straight at home dating back to last season, which is tied for third among active NCAA home winning streaks.
The Mustangs rank among the nation's best in rebound margin (9.9, 3rd NCAA), scoring defense (59.3, 3rd NCAA), field goal percentage defense (38.7, 8th NCAA), assist/turnover ratio (1.5, 8th NCAA), scoring margin (14.3, 9th NCAA) and three point percentage (39.8, 16th NCAA).
Jankovich boasts the best winning percentage by an NCAA coach at their current school (.867, 35-4) and has the most wins among coaches in their first full season at their current school.
Four finalists will be announced on Thursday, March 16 via Twitter (@Naismithtrophy). From there the final round of voting runs from March 20-30. The awarding of the 2017 Naismith Men's College Coach of the Year award will be at the Naismith Awards annual Final Four Awards Brunch on Sunday, April 2 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
