Call it: Woe -- By The Butt-Load.
Or maybe: If You Build It, They Will Suffer
I chuckle at those who say this experience was yet another fine step toward greatness. This, friends, was an unmitigated, ball-crushing Hindenberg ride - something that shouldn't have, couldn't have happened. But it did ---- again.
Stop kidding yourselves, people.
Plenty of WHOZAT schools over the years have gotten/are getting their lighting-bolt ride to the Sweet 16 --- out of NOWHERE ---- with MUCH less talent. But not good ol' SMU.

Would rather have a long-term building plan with a chance to get to the Tourney every year vs. one Sweet 16 trip for the next 30 years to enjoy.
2 Conference Championships, 2 Conference Tourney Championships, 1 NIT Finals Appearance and a 2nd place Conference finish in a year we are banned by the NCAA in 4 years is building a program and we didn't do this against mid-major conference talent. UConn won the Nat'l Tourney the year we beat them twice, Memphis and Cincy are perennially good teams and Temple and Houston are formidable most years.
We ain't George Mason and I'm glad for it.

But its shouldn't be one or the other. If we have that great a program we should have at least one NCAA tournament win to show for it. And long term is no guarantee at all - things can change fast. Just ask UConn.

This is what the Hindenburg of SMU basketball looks like-not losing by 1 to a 26 win P5 team after going 26-1. http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/sch ... edule.htmlThe 1985 team was probably our most loaded team in 60 years and was all set to become the No. 1 team in the Country before Bubby Jennings and Tony Benford said Nah on a cold winter's nite in Lubbock Texas. The resulting implosion and resulting 7-9 finish made the Hindenburg look like a amusement park ride with player dissension, selfish play (by some), lack of discipline, upset losses and embarrassment to the university. The 2017 team is one of the greatest collection of overachieving, team oriented warriors in SMU History-that's how this team should be remembered.

"MUCH less talent"
USC played at least 6 4 stars (according to Rivals) with a full roster -SMU played 2 4 stars with 6 players

That is our Peruna legacy. What year were we on the verge of defeating eventual national champion Georgetown when we snatched the defeat out of the jaws of victory?

1983-84 but that team lost in First Round of SWC Tournament too http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/sch ... edule.htmlNotice easier first round games 83-84 Miami (Ohio) 84--85 Old Dominion then Loyola(Ill) demonstrates the segregation of the NCAA Tournament between the P5s and the leftovers even more these days

Stability hinges on the fans. If we can keep people in the seats, we are going to keep recruiting. Great stadium, great facilities, and literally next door to NBA market.
