Milton Named POTW, Chargois Named Rookie of the Week
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU/AAC) – Junior guard Shake Milton was named the American Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, and freshman Ethan Chargois was named The American Rookie Of the Week, the league announced Monday. Milton averaged 26.0 points, while Chargois averaged 19.0 points and 8.5 rebounds as the Mustangs (2-0) won both games to open the season.
Milton, the American Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year, earned his first player of the week honor. The Owasso, Okla., native, who is on the Naismith Trophy, Lute Olson and Bob Cousy award watch lists, had a career-high 28 points (7-18 FG, 4-12 3FG, 10-10 FT), with three rebounds and two steals to in a 78-67 win over UMBC on Friday. Milton followed the season-opening performance with 24 points (7-13 FG, 4-7 3FG, 6-7 FT), four rebounds, two assists and a steal in an 83-65 victory over ULM. After two games, he is shooting 45.2 percent from the field (14-31), 42.1 percent from behind the three-point arc (8-19) and 94.1 percent from the free-throw line (16-17).
Chargois recorded 15 points (4-7 FG, 2-5 3FG, 5-7 FT) and eight rebounds in 29 minutes of work in his collegiate debut Friday, before posting 23 points (8-12 FG, 3-5 3FG, 4-4 FT) and nine rebounds in the win against ULM. Two games into his freshman campaign, the Tulsa, Okla., native, is shooting 63.2 percent from the field (12-19), 50.0 percent from the three-point arc (5-10) and 81.8 percent from the free-throw line (9-11).
This is the first time SMU has swept the weekly awards since joining the American Athletic Conference.
The Mustangs host Northwestern State on Wednesday at 7 p.m., then host UAPB Saturday at 7 p.m., before heading to the 2017 Battle 4 Atlantis.
