Copeland needs to leave

Our football team went winless and the basketball team gets blown out by fricking Rice?! There is no committment to improving SMU Athletics. I nominate Charlie Waters for AD. Atleast Charlie will get the Dallas Media behind SMU and back to winning.

There's a nomination for a "Fire Big Jim Copeland Committee"- can I get a second?

I am serious as hell-- We need to telephone bank Turners Office. If we do not make a change now we will be adopting new teams to pull for like UT or A&M because athletics was dropped at the hilltop. I am pissed at myself because I bought the bull&^%$ and doubled my Mustang Club gift. While it may not have been serious money to some it was to me. CHARLIE WATERS FOR AD

Just curious...what experience does Charlie Waters have as college athletic administrator?

Question: Why does Charlie Waters name cime up for every possible opening when someone on this board wants to fire someone? Perhaps we should hire Charlie Waters to coach the men's basketball team? If Schellas had left for the Burn, someone probably would have offered up Charlie Waters as a great substitute.

Charlie Waters is presently doing what he does best. He doesn't need to be involved with SMU.

THANK YOU EddieP and Bergermeister for bringing back a voice of reason here. My response has nothing to do with the job Copeland has done (although to be fair, he took over when Rossley had the football team improving but far from great, and when Shumate was doing his best to nosedive the basketball program to a level below the local YMCA).

Charlie Waters was a great player with the Cowboys. I gather he did a good job as an assistant coach with Oregon. That's it - he's done nothing to suggest he would be a capable AD. If another AD is needed, we'll find one. But let's drop Charlie Waters off the Christmas list once and for all, shall we? Maybe he would make a great AD, maybe he'd be a horrible. But if a change is made (and I personally don't think it should be), then a proven AD is needed. Not a former pro football player with no administrative experience.

That's hysterical. Did the presence of a Heisman winner (Mike Garrett) get the L.A. media behind USC? No. Did Garrett's presence get USC back to winning? No. Coach Carroll and his ability to recruit great players -- which ultimately leads to winning -- brought the program back. You could have Forrest Gregg or Eric Dickerson or Bill Parcells as AD, and if the team doesn't win, the media (especially in this town) won't care. To suggest that the media would be more supportive because of Waters is humorous at best. Why not make Staubach the university president while we're at it? Then we'd have the entire military in our corner.

Actually, we need to wait for George W. He can get all of the military behind us and over 65% of Texans would vote for him. Maybe Laura could fill in until his current job expires. Everyone likes her and the national media would show up in droves to see her admonish our coaches for not winning.

She loves SMU and I once played touch football with her and also a pick-up horse game so she is obviously qualified. Maybe Ann Richards if Laura won't do it. She got Baylor in the Big 12, maybe she could do the same for us. When we had a governor, he got us killed. Oh well, maybe we should look for someone who isn't such a big name (:

Berger, you may believe this to be true, but I know Charlie and talked with him last month at a charity function at which he and Cliff H. talked about their book. He was (and is) "devastated" that he did not get the FB job. He further told me he thought he was "the perfect guy for the job." He told me he thought Copeland did not like him.

This post is not meant to be a jab against Coach Bennett, I am still completely behind him. I just thought I should set the record straight about where Charlie wanted to be.
