If I was responsible for hiring a new HC, my short list would be:
Nate Oats
Jerry Stackhouse
Grant McCasland
If they become available:
Shaka Smart
Avery Johnson

Assuming Musselman and Buzz don't end up being realistic, I love giving a good long look to Oats

I am an SMU fan and season ticket holder, but having gone to LSU as well, I enjoy watching LSU. 2years ago LSU hired Will Wade--he is a young ball of fire. Look where they are after 2 yrs of great recruiting and a coach who makes constant in game changes. I don't know how far they will go this year, but LSU is young and deep. I like Jank, but I believe it is time for a change. 3 games in a row where there was horrible defensive or offensive plays at the end of game. Letting USF best shooter go wide open at the end of the games was terrible. Versus Wichita St--horrible defense at the end. I know players have to do what the coach draws up, so they are at blame too, but example after example is so frustrating!!! Hopefully, since Mr Miller runs the BBall program, we will go after someone new immediately after this year. In my mind, this year has been so hard to watch. It is so sad to see the terrible attendance and even worse--the student section is flat [deleted] embarrassing!!! How can 500 students not attend a game. No excuse!!! Let's start new and pray for a 2015-2016 type seasons again.

Oats seems pretty comfortable.... and under contract for awhile.

I am sure he isn't going to step out on a limb for a job, but we could double his salary without even paying him what we pay Jank and he would have better facilities, support, conference affiliations, etc.
I don't think he plans on setting up shop in Buffalo long term. I have seen coaches buy and sell houses within 6 months for a better gig.
Good breakdown on Oats contract situation:

Agreed - SMU and the AAC would be a huge step up from Buffalo (no need for jokes about current state of our program, it's clear those in the know understand what can be done here)

This will be an attractive job if available. But whoever we bring in will not make much impact to record next year.
Anyone know if the Aggie is planning on playing in December or waiting a full year? Is he already on campus?

Takes one or two players to come with the new and improved coach, and voila! Much improved record. It's basketball not football. One guy can carry a team.

Buzz looks dapper on the VT bench. Tied with Duke with 7 to play.

Buzz would be such a ridiculous home run hire, but it would take an incredible offer. Have to think A&M will be all over him as well.

Eric Musselman is such an obvious choice with his SMU connections and his success in a non-power conference, it almost seems TOO obvious to go get him (but we should, lol).

Meanwhile, Alabama just hired Nate Oats after Oats had signed an extension with Buffalo
