Kendric Davis Named National Player Of The Week
Davis Earns Honor From NCAA.com And Lute Olson Award
DALLAS (SMU) - Kendric Davis was named the March Madness National Player of the Week by Andy Katz of NCAA.com and the Lute Olsen Award National Player of the Week.
Davis averaged 23.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.0 steals as the Mustangs started 2-0 in the American Athletic Conference. In the 74-69 win at Tulsa Wednesday, he had 26 points (19 in the first half), four rebounds and three assists. He followed that with 20 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, four steals and a blocked shot in the 72-60 victory against UCF Sunday.
Davis is on the 2021-22 Wooden Award Watch List, Naismith Trophy Watch List, Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award Watch List, Lute Olson National Player of the Year Watch List and was a unanimous preseason All-American Athletic Conference First-Team selection.
This is his second career National Player of the Week honor, earning ESPN's award from Jeff Borzello on Dec. 7, 2020. He was also named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll. This was his sixth AAC weekly honor of the season, including three American Athletic Conference Player of the Week Awards. It his 17th career conference weekly honor, which is second at SMU to Nic Moore's 20 AAC weekly awards from 2013-16.
Through 14 games this season, Davis is averaging 21.5 points (1st AAC, 5th NCAA), 5.4 assists (2nd AAC, 29th NCAA), 4.9 rebounds and 1.6 steals (7th AAC) while shooting 48.6% overall (3rd AAC), 38.5% on threes (3rd AAC) and 88.9% on free throws (2nd AAC, 27th NCAA). Davis has a 2.2 assist-to-turnover ratio (4th AAC) and is making 2.5 three-pointers per game (3rd AAC).
The Mustangs (11-3, 2-0 AAC) have won eight straight games (Sam Houston, ULM, UNLV, Vanderbilt, Dayton, at New Mexico, at Tulsa, UCF) and are 9-0 at Moody Coliseum this season. The Mustangs play at Cincinnati on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT.
