Retirement effective immediately — no reason given yet.

No interim replacement named yet.

Bennett is a two-time national coach of the year who led Virginia to the national championship in 2019. He won six ACC regular-season titles and two ACC tournament titles.

Bennett signed a two-year contract extension in June through the end of the 2029-30 season.

Impact on our early game with them? Big, little or none?

Hard to say. The defense will be there as usual and there are some new pieces that are supposed to help on offense which was the big problem last year (couldn't make FTs to put away the game, for pete's sake). Ron Sanchez one of the 2 Associate HCs will take over as interim. He had a so-so record as the HC at Charlotte.

My Virginia buddy tells me Sanchez was the guy who brought in 4-5 portal guys this year so it's basically "his team". His take on this is that if Sanchez can carry on without missing a beat, the HC job will probably be his going forward. Big question is whether Bennett will stay on with the University in some capacity but he reportedly had been considering retiring after this season (despite having signed a contract extension)
