Defense Lifts Mustangs Past Western Michigan 72-44

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's basketball team's defensive pressure led SMU to a 72-44 victory over Western Michigan on Tuesday inside Moody Coliseum.

In front of over 2,000 local k-12 students attending the game as part of education day, the Mustangs recorded 18 steals and forced WMU to turn over the ball 33 times which lead to multiple double-digit scoring runs including a 17-0 run in the third quarter.

The 18 steals are the most in a single game for the Mustangs since 2019 and the 33 turnovers forced are the most in the past 24 years for the Mustangs.

Guard TK Pitts led the charge on defense with a career high six steals. It was the most steals by a player since former Mustang Tamia Jones also had six against Alabama State last season.
Pitts also had a career high five assist and scored a season high eight points shooting 4-of-8 from the floor.

Guard Ella Brow scored 10 of her 13 points in the first half to help the Mustangs jump out to their early lead. It was her most points in a game since scoring her career high of 14 against East Carolina in 2023. Brow was 5-of-10 from the field and made one three. She tied her career high in field goals made and it was the most field goals she has attempted in her career.

Guard Nya Robertson led all scorers with 16 points as she has now scored 66 points over her first three games as a Mustang. Forward Chantae Embry went 7-of-7 from the line and scored 11 points. She has now made nine consecutive foul shots over the past two games.

// HOW IT HAPPENED
After WMU jumped out to a 5-0 lead Robertson got the crowd involved with a tough and-1 finish to equalize the game early. SMU proceeded to go on a 12-0 run using the crowd to its advantage and forcing Western Michigan into tough shots. The Mustangs defensive pressure forced six turnovers during the quarter.

Peterson and Brow scored five in the first and helped SMU claim a 17-9 lead at the end of the quarter.

Both teams continued to trade buckets as Brow and Embry led the charge for the Mustangs in the second quarter. SMU used its defense to create offense as the lead grew to 10 late in the period. SMU ended the second quarter on a 15-3 run including a buzzer beating layup from Pitts to close out the run.

Brow had a season-high 10 points at the end of the first half on 4-7 shooting as SMU held a 36-20 advantage through two quarters. The Mustangs end the half with 10 steals.

SMU continued to force WMU to make bad decisions that would lead to turnovers as the Mustangs ended the third quarter on a 17-0 run capped off by a Robertson three pointer. SMU was up 55-25 at the end of third and outscored WMU 19-5 in the third quarter.

The Mustangs defense did not slow down in the fourth quarter as the team increased their steal total to 18 as SMU held on for a 72-44 win.
