CHARLOTTE, N.C. (ACC/SMU) – SMU forward Matt Cross was named ACC Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. This is the first ACC Player of the Week for the Mustangs in their inaugural season in the league.
Cross had a team-high 16 points and a career-high tying 16 rebounds in SMU's 74-64 win over LSU in the Compete 4 Cause Classic at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas on Saturday. He also had a pair of assists, a steal and a block in 35 minutes as the Mustangs won their fifth straight game and improved to 9-2 on the season.
Cross is fifth in the ACC in rebounds (8.6) and double-doubles (3). He has at least eight rebounds in each of the past seven games. He is sixth in the ACC with 2.8 offensive rebounds per game after tying his season high with seven versus LSU.
SMU is averaging 84.7 points (2nd ACC, 27th NCAA) while shooting 47.4% (4th ACC) overall and 36.3% on threes (4th ACC). The Mustangs are leading the ACC in assists (16.5), rebound margin (+10.4, 10th NCAA), total rebounds (42.5, 13th NCAA), offensive rebounds (14.4, 19th NCAA) and bench points (33.0, 21st NCAA). SMU is second in the ACC in steals (8.1, 20th NCAA) and sixth in blocked shots (4.2).
SMU is now 3-0 in neutral-site games, including a 77-60 win over Washington State in the Acrisure Holiday Invitational championship game in Palm Springs, California on Nov. 27.
The Mustangs opened ACC play with a 63-51 home win over Virginia on Dec. 7. SMU plays its first ACC road game on Saturday at Boston College at 12 p.m. ET/11 a.m. CT (TV: The CW)
