Mustangs Take Down Syracuse 72-71 In Overtime Victory
Nya Robertson scored 28 points and made the game-winning layup
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (SMU) – Nya Robertson's late-game heroics lifted the SMU women's basketball team over Syracuse 72-71 in an overtime thriller on Thursday inside the JMA Wireless Dome.
Trailing by one with 16 seconds left in overtime, Nya Robertson stepped up and came up huge for the Mustangs, getting the game-winning layup to fall after bouncing off the back of the rim with one second left in the game. The Orange were unable to get another shot off as SMU held on for the win. The lead changed 12 times, and the game was tied 11 times throughout the contest.
The Mustangs are now 2-0 in overtime games this season and 10-6 (2-2 ACC) overall, while Syracuse is now 6-9 (0-4 ACC).
Robertson led all scorers with 28 points shooting 12-25 from the floor. It is her third 20-point game in a row and her ninth this season. Four of her points came in the overtime period.
Kaysia Woods had her best game as a Mustang as she scored 12 points on 5-7 shooting, including hitting the three to send the game to overtime. Sandra Magolico added a career high nine points and led the team in rebounds.
Squared away at 60 a piece, Syracuse took the lead after making two foul shots. SMU cut the lead down to one after Robertson hit a foul shot of her own only to have the answer on the following possession. With 40 seconds left in the game and SMU trailing by three,
Kaysia Woods hit the biggest shot of her Mustang career sinking a corner three to tie the game. After forcing a turnover, SMU had a chance to win the game but were unable and headed to overtime.
The Mustangs led at the half, but Syracuse came out off the break swinging, hitting two threes to start the third as led by as much as six in the quarter. Robertson led the charge late in the period as the Mustangs stormed back and led by one heading into the fourth. Robertson scored six in the quarter and Sandra Magolico added five.
Kaysia Woods caught fire in the first quarter, shooting 3-3 from the field and scoring seven points as the Mustangs jumped out to a 16-10 lead at the end of the first.
Syracuse climbed back into the game in the second as Robertson took over the scoring duties for SMU. Robertson scored 10 points in the quarter including knocking down two from beyond the arc. The Mustangs went 3-5 from three-point range in the period.
Robertson led all scorers with 12 points at the break as SMU was up 32-31 at the half. The Mustangs shot 50% from the floor in the first, but the Orange were able to keep pace shooting 8-10 from the foul line.
