Mustangs fall at home to No. 14 North Carolina

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's basketball team fell 64-33 to No. 14 North Carolina on Thursday inside Moody Coliseum.

The Mustangs struggled to find offensive consistency against the Tar Heels, who entered the game ranked 10th in the NCAA in scoring defense, allowing 54 points a game. SMU shot 19% from the floor compared to UNC's 40% as SMU had 10 points in the paint to the Tar Heels' 34.

Kaysia Woods opened the game with a three for the Mustangs as UNC then proceeded to go on a 9-0 run over six minutes of game action. SMU's defense picked up steam and gave UNC's offense trouble. The Tar Heels only led 13-6 despite SMU shooting 2-of-16 in the first.

Woods was the only Mustang in double-figures as she scored 12 points and went 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. She also collected six rebounds.

UNC started the second quarter on an 8-0 as the lead continued to grow. SMU got going late in the period, scoring seven points in the final two minutes as the Tar Heels led 31-14 at the break. Woods had seven points in the first including hitting a pair of three-pointers.

The Tar Heels Lexi Donarski scored 12 points in the second half and went 5-6 from three-point range in the game as UNC pulled away in the second half. Woods scored five points in the fourth quarter.

Nya Robertson ended her night with five points, ending her consecutive double-digit scoring streak. Jessica Peterson grabbed 12 rebounds and also scored five points.

The Mustangs are now 10-8 (2-4 ACC) overall, while North Carolina's improved to 16-3 (4-2 ACC).

Our leading scorer Nya Robertson was held to 1-19 shooting and 5 points dropping her season shooting percentage to 34%. Rough night!

Everyone has bad days. It happens.

But 6 players have higher shooting percentages than Robertson, yet she has put up 349 shots ... more than the next 2 most frequent shooters -- Jones (164) and Embry (149) -- combined. Not saying she shouldn't shoot, of course, but if almost half the team is more accurate, maybe don't put it up more than 19 times a game.

That's on the coach.

OK, I'll say she shouldn't shoot.

In Robertson's defense, she plays more ,minutes than anyone else, she's our best 3 point shooter and almost half her attempts come from three. She gets fouled a lot, shoots more FTs than anyone else and makes them at an 81% clip. She can be careless with the ball and force things (sounds like Zhuric Phelps last year) and has twice as many turnovers as she dishes out assists. I think the women's game against UNC was much like our men's game against Duke where we were simply out athleted and that can lead to some poor shooting percentages but that one game was a rough follow up to the blown lead vs Pitt
