WBB losing streak reaches 8 with 70-69 loss at No. 17 GaTech

Women's basketball falls to No. 17 Georgia Tech

ATLANTA (SMU) – In a game decided in the final seconds, the SMU women's basketball program fell in heartbreaking fashion on road, 70-69 to No. 17/19 Georgia Tech on Thursday inside McCamish Pavilion.

Tied at 68 with 30 seconds left in the game SMU let the clock wind down before taking the final shot. Zanai Jones drove into the paint and had her shot bounce off the rim and was rebound by Georgia Tech with 1.2 seconds left. Jessica Peterson was called for a foul trying to fight for the rebounds which sent the Yellow Jackets to the line for the game winning free throws.

On the following SMU possession Nya Robertson was fouled and sent to the line with six-tenth of a second left. She missed the first and made the second. SMU had one more chance after a five second violation was called on GT's following offensive possession, but the desperation heave fell short.

After a strong third quarter that saw the Mustangs outscore the Yellow Jackets 26-18, the team carried that moment into fourth and led by eight with five minutes left. Georgia Tech ended the game on an 8-3 run in the final three minutes.

The Mustangs are now 10-14 (2-10 ACC) overall, while Georgia Tech improved to 19-4 (7-4 ACC).

Both teams ended the night shooting 40% from as the Yellow Jackets made nine three pointers to SMU's six. The Mustangs had 19 second chance points, but GT held the advantage at the line shooting 15-of-22.

SMU had five players in double-figures for the second game this season as TK Pitts led the Mustangs in scoring with a season-high 19 points, 18 of which came in the second half. She scored 11 of SMU's 26 points in the third quarter and shot 6-of-10 from the field and 7-of-8 from the line in the game. Pitts fouled out of the game with 1:40 remaining.

Peterson, Jones and Robertson all scored 12 points. Peterson recorded her 11th double-double of the season as she hauled in 15 rebounds in addition to her 12 points. Jones was an efficient 5-of-9 from the floor and had five assists.

Kaysia Woods scored all 11 of her points in the first as she knocked down three from beyond the arc.

The Mustangs got out to a fast start as Kaysia Woods hit two three pointers and ended the first with eight points. SMU led 18-13 after closing out the quarter on a 7-to-3 run. SMU was 7-of-15 from the floor in the first period as five Mustangs scored.

Georgia Tech heated up in the second period as the Yellow Jackets hit four from behind the arc. GT's Tiann Thompson had eight in the period as Robertson led SMU with four. Georiga Tech outscored SMU 21-10 in the quarter and led 34-28 at the half. Woods led all scorers with 11 points in the first half shooting 4-of-6 from the floor and knocking down three three-pointers.

SMU came out the half on fire and showed no signs of backing down. The trio of Pitts (11), Peterson (8) and Jones (7) scored all 26-third quarter points for the Mustangs as was a combined 11-of-12 from the floor. SMU led by two at the end of the period.

SMU had five in double figures for the second time this season (1-1) this season.
SMU ended the game with 17 offensive rebounds and has had over 12 offensive rebounds in 19 of the 24 games played this season. The Mustangs entered the game second in the ACC in offensive rebounds a game.
SMU is now 0-1 all-time against Georgia Tech

Great effort and despite going through a disappointing season it shows this team has not quit

The comebacks (they have had quite a few) speak to the character of the players.
But with a new AD coming, I'd be sweating if I were Wilson.
