Women's basketball falls at home to Clemson, 72-46
DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's basketball team started strong but fell 72-46 to Clemson on Sunday inside Moody Coliseum.
The Mustangs led by two at the end of one but were outscored 22-10 in the second quarter and were unable to climb back into the game. The Tigers outrebounded SMU 48-24 and outshot the Mustangs 45%-to 33.9% in the game.
Jessica Peterson recorded her fourth double-double in a row as she ended the game with 10 points and 10 rebounds. She now has collected 319 rebounds this season and is only 20 away from the school record.
Nya Robertson led SMU scoring with 14 points as she went 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. It was her seventh game with four or more three-pointers made. Twelve of her 14 points came in the first quarter.
Freshman Kayanna Cox was a bright spot in the second half for the Mustangs as she tied her career high with six points and had four rebounds and two steals.
The Mustangs are now 10-16 (2-12 ACC) overall, while Clemson improved to 13-13 (6-9 ACC).
SMU began the game on a 10-2 run as Robertson hit three threes. Clemson answered with a 7-0 run, but Robertson gave the momentum back to the Mustangs after hitting her third three of the quarter. She ended the period 4-of-5 from three-point range and had 12 points as SMU was up 18-16.
Both teams traded buckets at the start of the second but SMU took control, going on a 6-0 run halfway through the period to regain the lead after trailing by three. Clemson closed out the quarter on a 15-2 run and led by 10 at the half. Robertson led SMU with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting in the half, while Peterson added six of her own.
Clemson's defensive pressure and offensive rebounding proved to be too much for the Mustangs in the second half, as the team was outscored 34-18.
