Peterson breaks single-season rebounds record as Mustangs fall to Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (SMU) – Zanai Jones, Kylie Marshall each scored 21 points and Jessica Peterson broke the SMU women's basketball single-season rebounding record as the Mustangs fell on the road 87-78 to Boston College on Thursday inside the Conte Forum.

Peterson scored 11 points and recorded four rebounds en route to breaking the program's single-season rebounding record. Her season total is now at 341, surpassing Alicia Froling's 2016-2017 record total of 339.

The senior is the third Mustang in school history ever to record 300 rebounds in a single season. She entered the game only three away from breaking the record and achieved it in the second quarter of the game.

Trailing by 15 at the start of the fourth the Mustangs gave it everything they had scoring 31 points as Jones and Marshall combined for 26 points in the quarter but it was not enough to catch Boston College who scored 25 in the period. SMU shot a season-high 48% from the field and was 10-of-18 from three-point range, while BC was 50% from the floor and was 23-of-26 from the foul line.

Jones scored 15 of her career-high 21 points in the fourth quarter making 6-of-7 field goals in the period leading SMU back into the game. She made four of her five three-point attempts to record her third 20 point game of her career.

Marshall scored a career-high 21 points going 6-of-8 from beyond the arc. It is the most made three-pointers in a game since Morgan Bolton made six vs Houston in 2017. Marshall was 7-of-10 from the field in the game and it was her first career 20-point game.

It marked the second time this season SMU had two players reach 20 points in a game.

Freshman Kayanna Cox had her best game of the season as she scored a career-high 13 points and collected four rebounds.

The Mustangs are now 10-18 (2-14 ACC) overall, while Boston College improved to 14-15 (5-11 ACC).

It was an evenly contested first quarter as the SMU defense forced multiple turnovers that resulted in fast break buckets for the Mustangs. Boston College pulled away at the end of the quarter and led 19-14. Peterson led SMU with five in the period.

BC opened the second quarter on a 4-0 run before SMU scored five consecutive points, including three from Marshall. The Eagles responded with an 11-5 run and increased the lead to double digits. Four late-quarter points from Cox got the BC lead back down to single digits as the Mustangs trailed 40-32 at the half.

SMU shot 52% from the floor in the first but turned over the ball 12 times in the half. Peterson led SMU with nine points, while both Cox and Marshall chimed in six apiece.

BC began the third on a 13-4 run before a steal and score layup from Cox put an end to the run. Cox scored six points in the quarter and eclipsed double-digit points for the first time in her career. BC outscored SMU 22-15 in the period and led by 15.

SMU defensive pressure picked up to begin the fourth, resulting in a 7-0 run for the Mustangs. After a corner three from Jones SMU cut the lead to single digits with 4:30 left in the game. Another Jones bucket capped off a 7-0 run for the Mustangs, who continued to chip away at the lead. The Eagles converted some timely baskets and pushed the lead back to double digits with a minute left in the game and held on for a nine-point victory.
