FINAL
Stanford 73, SMU 68

Mustangs fall to 21-8, 12-6 ACC

North Carolina whipped Miami, 92-73
Wake Forest is losing to Notre Dame, 60-57

At the moment, SMU is tied with UNC at 12-6 in ACC games.
If Wake Forest loses to ND, the Demon Deacons will fall to 11-7, but if they win, there's a three-way tie in fourth place — the top four in the regular season get a double bye in the ACC Tournament.

Up next: SMU hosts Syracuse at 8 PM Tuesday

Unfortunately our team seems great at giving up any leads we have in the 2nd half. Some times we end up w/the W but it’s so frustrating. I’m bad about comparing this team to our team when Nic played. I always had confidence we would win the 2nd half (and the game) & w/this team I am always afraid we’ll lose the 2nd half.

It really has hurt us the last two weeks not able to have our best player due to injury. The run without the best player, given the lack of quality depth, actually has been a pleasant surprise. Am I happy, no. Am I optimistic for next year, yes. We make a deep run in the NIT this year will be a huge advancement. We have played a far more quality schedule just because of our new conference. We just don't have that one special player needed in the stretch on the floor the last tow or so weeks. I hope that changes soon. Win the next two and we should have a decent chance to make some quality wins in the ACC tourney.

I had assumed we would lose this game with Stanford being back at full strength and our being without Boopie, especially after we humiliated them in Moody. I thought our guys really played their guts out and actually thought they might pull this one out but it was Stanford's senior night and they got a huge boost from Benny Gealer playing what might have been the game of his life. Gealer scored ZERO points in Moody on 0-6 shooting including 0-3 from three and he averages 6 points per game. Last night he went 6-7 including 5-6 from three, with some of those threes being heaved up from Steph Curry range.

With Boopie out, Oquendo played 34 minutes, Harris 35, Cross 36 and B.J. 37 compared to their season averages in ACC games of 24, 29, 31 & 31 respectively. These guys played intense defense to get back into the game and actually take the lead but down the stretch they just couldn't hit the critical shots they needed. Edwards missed 2 floaters in the lane that could have made the difference in this game but give credit to Maxime Raynaud who blocked 4 shots and altered so many more. At one point after we took the lead, I thought to myself it was going to take Traore and Edwards joining Harris, Cross and Oquendo in double figures to win this game and it almost happened. With Boopie out, Edwards is being called on to contribute more scoring and that's still doesn't appear to be in his comfort zone. I do think he's improved this year and sure hope he returns for his SR season (as well as Boopie) because we are really going to miss Harris and Oquendo next year.
