Mustangs Post Trio Of Runner-Up Finishes At Tulsa
Tulsa Remains In Possession Of Lawless Cup With 1V8+ Victory

April 19, 2014

CATOOSA, Okla. (SMU) - The SMU rowing team finished second in three of its four races at Tulsa on Saturday morning, including a runner-up finish in the First Varsity 8+ race where Tulsa took home the victory and the Lawless Cup for the third-straight year.

"We had a good day versus Tulsa and Creighton," Head Coach Doug Wright said. "We haven't quite caught Tulsa yet, but the gap was closed considerably."

SMU finished the Varsity 8+ race in an impressive, season-best time of 6:45.27 behind the crew from Tulsa who clocked in at 6:38.5. Creighton placed third in the race with a time of 6:51.28.

In Second Varsity 8+ action, the Ponies finished in 6:57.4 and were edged out by the Golden Hurricane (6:49.14), but once again defeated the Bluejays (7:12.45).

"In the 2v we repeated a defeat of Creighton for the second time this season," Wright said. "Where we were really impressive in the 2v was the amount of time we made up on Tulsa from just a week ago. We made up nearly 12 seconds over their 2v time and broke seven minutes for the first time this season."

SMU's other second-place finish came from its Frosh/Novice 4+ crew who finished their race in 8:07.96.

SMU also competed in the Varsity 4+ race and finished in 8:07.31, good for third.

"Our 4's raced well and with a few of the athletes in these crews that have not had a lot of races under their belts this season, I thought they were great," said Wright. "The team put together a great row today. We can continue to build speed into conference championships."

The Mustangs are back in action next Saturday, April 26, when they host Central Oklahoma at White Rock Lake.
