Getting To Know SMU Women's Soccer: Shelby Redman
Senior Forward Looks To Lead Mustangs To Successful Season

Aug. 14, 2014

DALLAS (SMU) - Shelby Redman has been a key contributor for the SMU women's soccer team for the past three seasons. The redshirt senior has compiled 19 goals in her career, tying her for 17th all-time on the SMU scoring list. She has been named second team all-conference the past two seasons and has already earned preseason honors from CollegeSportsMadness.com this season. Despite all of the accomplishments, Redman's focus remains on leading a young Mustang squad to a successful season.

"Our goals are to win our conference championship and to get a bid into the NCAA Championships," said Redman. "I just want to do what I can to help us achieve these team goals."

After a strong preseason, Redman expressed optimism about this year's team. "Preseason has been really competitive," Redman said. "This has been the most competitive squad since I've been here."

One of Redman's biggest responsibilities as a veteran has been mentoring an incoming freshmen class of eight student-athletes. "They all have great personalities and such a passion for soccer," Redman said about the freshmen. "With that sort of drive, it's easy to get everyone on board."

The Austin, Texas, native has not only served as a leader on the field, but in the classroom as well. Redman, an advertising major, was named to the Second Team Academic All-District team a year ago after earning a GPA of 3.44. The senior will look to further her success, both on and off the field, in her final campaign on the Hilltop.

"I'm sad that my journey is coming to an end," said Redman about her final season here at SMU. "But I'm really excited about the future of SMU women's soccer because of what the coaching staff has done in the short amount of time that they have been here."

The Mustangs kick off their season on Saturday with a home exhibition match against Oklahoma State at 7 p.m. CT. SMU will then travel to Nebraska on Aug. 22 for the regular season opener.
