Young's 17 Kills Lead SMU To 3-0 Win At Tulane

NEW ORLEANS (SMU) - Caroline Young scored 17 kills to lead SMU to a 3-0 victory (25-19, 25-19, 25-16) at Tulane Friday afternoon. Young hit .654 for the match, attacking 26 times without an error. With the win, SMU improved to 18-5 overall and 7-4 in the American Athletic Conference, while Tulane fell to 5-18, 3-8 in The American.
The Mustangs ended the match with a 25-16 win in the third set to take four of the last five matches against the Green Wave. Tulane led 7-5, but the Mustangs scored six unanswered to take an 11-7 lead. The Green Wave answered with four of the next five to get within one, 12-11, but SMU went on a 13-4 run to close the set and end the match.
Morgan Heise led the SMU defense with 20 digs as the Mustangs held Tulane to a .124 attack percentage. SMU had 47 digs as a team, and Avery Acker finished with 39 assists and 11 digs for her 18th double-double of the season. Abbey Bybel scored nine kills, and SMU finished with 46 as a team, hitting .376.
The Mustangs took the first set 25-19, with six kills from Young. The score was tied after the first 10 points, but SMU started to ease out in front, taking a two point lead, 7-5. The Mustangs stretched the lead to five, 17-12, and led by as many as seven points in the set, scoring the last point on a kill from Kristen Stehling.
Young scored seven kills in the second set, and Heise had 10 digs as SMU took a 2-0 lead in the match with another 25-19 victory. The Mustangs took a 7-4 lead to start the set, but the Green Wave kept it close, trailing by just one, 15-14. SMU scored three straight to take the lead to four, 18-14, and the Green Wave didn't threaten again. The Mustangs scored kills on three of the last four points for the win.
SMU concludes the four-match road stretch at Houston Sunday at 1 p.m. The Mustangs return home on Nov. 7 to host Memphis at 7 p.m. in Moody Coliseum.
