Mustangs Finish Weekend With A Pair Of Dual Meet Victories

Nov. 1, 2014

MANSFIELD, Texas (SMU) – The 11th-ranked SMU women’s swimming and diving team swept all 11 swimming events to earn a 155-88 dual meet victory over American Athletic Conference opponent Houston on Saturday afternoon at the Mansfield Natatorium.

The Mustangs continued their relay success going one-two in the 400-yard medley relay to open the event. SMU’s ‘A’ relay group of seniors Isabella Arcila, Rachel Nicol and Nicole Parmenter, along with sophomore Marne Erasmus touched the wall in 3:49.02 for the victory, with the Mustang ‘B’ group following up with a 3:56.41. The runner-up squad was composed of juniors Anna Volchkov and Tiffany Sudarma, sophomore Tara-Lynn Nicholas and freshman Kyra Kondis.

In the final event of the night, the 400-yard freestyle relay, senior Nathalie Lindborg, Erasmus, sophomore Ursa Bezan and freshman Adrienn Santa posted a 3:30.22 for the win. The Ponies also picked up third-place points in the event.

“This was a great facility to give us a chance to let a lot of relays and individuals swim in order to contribute to our finish,” Head Coach Steve Collins said. “There were a lot of good swims in the relay events, both in medley and freestyle. Having the ability to swim in 10 lanes gives us great opportunities.”

For the second consecutive day, Arcila won the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke clocking in at 23.45 and 56.85, respectively. Santa was second in the 50-free, while Volchkov was third in the 100-back.

“She [Arcila] really showed her dominance in backstroke yesterday and today, and I’m really happy with her swims this weekend,” Collins said. “It’s great to see her be so consistent.”

Nathalie Lindborg won both the 100- and 200-yard freestyles edging out teammates Santa (100-free) and Bezan (200-free) for the top spot.

Other individual event winners included sophomore Kirsty McLauchlan (10:20.02), who defeated her closest competition in the 1,000-yard freestyle by just over 17 seconds, Nicol (2:08.52) in the 200-yard individual medley, Erasmus (55.36) in the 100-yard butterfly, Bezan (5:02.46) in the 500-yard freestyle and Nicholas (1:03.23) in the 100-yard breaststroke.

“As an IM’er Kirsty is very versatile and as part of the 400 IM she has to do some serious distance training to be prepared for the event,” Collins said. “Today we got to see her swim in her first 1,000-free and she did a really nice job for us. It gives us a little bit of balance as a team for dual meets.”

Freshman Madeline Wainman picked up second-place points for SMU in the 3-meter dive posting a 292.58, and was fourth in the one-meter dive. Sophomore Lauren Lamb also contributed to the Mustangs’ team score in both diving events.

“Our divers had a good opportunity to be able to go through their list of dives on Friday, and be able to come right back the next day,” Collins said. “It helps them prepare in the diving events, and I thought they came through really well today. Houston is traditionally the strongest team in the conference in diving so it’s great Madeline was able to pull out a good score.”

“We’ve got a great group of seniors and for them to step up really gives the rest of the team a lot of confidence,” Collins added. “We’re fortunate to have a great group in and out of the pool.”

SMU is back in action Nov. 20-22 at the Texas A&M Invite in College Station. The event will start at 10 a.m. CT each day. Check SMUMustangs.com for ways to follow the meet.
