PROVIDENCE, R.I. (The American/SMU) – The SMU men’s swimming & diving team swept the American Athletic Conference weekly awards for the second time this season, conference officials announced on Tuesday.
Devin Burnett was named diver of the week for the third time this season, while freestyler Christian Scherübl was named swimmer of the week.
Burnett, a senior from Plano, Texas, was honored for his performance at the Tennessee Diving Invitational on Jan. 3-5. Burnett finished second in the one-meter with a score of 371.45 in the finals. In the three-meter dive, he placed third with a finals score of 357.25. On the final day of competition, Burnett finished third in the platform with a score of 316.50.
Scherübl, a freshman from Gratwein, Austria, made a splash in his collegiate debut, a dual meet versus LSU on Jan. 3. Scherübl won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:39.91 and then cruised to a victory in the 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 4:33.56. He then swam the fourth leg for the 400-yard freestyle relay team that ended the meet with a victory (3:02.90).
SMU also swept the conference’s weekly awards on Nov. 18, when Burnett was named diver of the week and junior Sam Straughan was named swimmer of the week.
