GREENSBORO, N.C. (SMU) -- The SMU men’s swimming and diving team finished a close second at the American Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday night at the Greensboro Aquatics Center.

The Mustangs finished 34.5 points behind first-place East Carolina. Connecticut finished third, with Cincinnati placing fourth.

Christian Scherubl was named The American’s Most Outstanding Swimmer after earning his third individual gold in the 100-yard freestyle (43.59). Scherubl, who also won the 200-yard free and 500-yard free, knocked off top qualifier Nikola Simic of East Carolina.

Devin Burnett earned Most Outstanding Diver honors for the second consecutive year. Burnett won the platform (388.15), giving the senior a sweep of the diving events.

Hayden Hodges and David Bunn also landed on the podium in the platform, as Hodges won the silver (314.20) and Bunn grabbed the bronze (308.75).

For the diving team’s efforts, Jim Stillson was named The American’s Diving Coach of the Year.

Sam Straughan added to his gold medal collection, taking first in the 200-yard backstroke with a ‘B’ cut time (1:44.72), while Bartosz Krzyzaniak added a fourth-place finish (1:47.23).

Tyler Rauth won the gold in the 200-yard butterfly, setting a new meet record and posting a ‘B’ cut time (1:45.00). Tucker Wells placed fourth (1:48.12).

The Mustangs’ team of Cerkovnik, Rauth, Straughan and Scherubl ended the meet with a silver medal in the 400-yard freestyle relay (2:56.80).

Next up for the Mustangs is the American Short Course Championship in Austin, Texas, on March 5-7.
