Scherubl Breaks School Record At American Short Course Championship

AUSTIN, Texas -- Freshman Christian Scherubl broke his own school record in the 200-yard freestyle on Friday, as the SMU men's swimming team competed in the American Short Course Championship at the University of Texas' Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
Scherubl finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:34.56, .33 seconds faster than his previous school record (1:34.89) set at the American Athletic Conference Championship on Feb. 20. Prior to Scherubl, Lars Frolander held the school record with a 1:34.96 in 1997.
The Austria native's time ranks in the top 30 in the country, putting him in the discussion for a berth to the NCAA Championship on March 26-28.
Sam Straughan, who ranks in the top 40 in the 100-yard backstroke, finished first in the event tonight with a time of 46.63, just .03 off of his previous best time (46.60).
Senior Tyler Rauth also competed on Friday, finishing second in the 100-yard butterfly with a season-best time of 47.21.
Three Mustangs competed in the 100-yard breaststroke, with Ziga Cerkovnik touching the wall sixth in the preliminary round (54.49). In the final, Stefan Popov finished 12th (55.87) and Tucker Wells placed 16th and recorded a new season-best time (56.74). Cerkovnik did not swim in the final.
Action continues tomorrow at 9:15 a.m. with prelims. Finals will begin at 6 p.m.
