CONFERENCE RELEASE
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (The American/SMU) – For the second-straight season, the men’s swimming and diving program earned the American Athletic Conference Team Excellence Award in its respective sport for posting the conference’s highest team grade point average.
“It’s a great honor to be recognized by the conference,†head coach Eddie Sinnott said. “The whole program should be proud, and we are thankful and humbled by this award. We are also appreciative of the support and effort put in by the institution as a whole, and specifically our academic counselor Emily Cobb.â€
The Mustangs, who posted a 3.363 GPA have now won the award in each of The American’s two seasons. SMU was also in the top 10, following only six teams, on the CSCAA Scholar All-America list for their efforts during the spring semester, and Tyler Rauth and Sam Straughan earned the distinction of Scholar All-America.
“In the fall our team GPA ranked 14th overall in Division I men’s swimming and diving, and we made it a goal to be in the top 10 in the spring. This is a culmination of our goal setting efforts, and it is a result of our recruiting philosophy. We recruit student-athletes that understand our academic mentality."
The program joined the men’s soccer team on the league’s list of recognized teams.
SMU recently announced the addition of 10 new Mustangs to the Hilltop for the 2015-16 season. For program information, ‘like’ the Mustangs at Facebook.com/SMUSwimDiveM and ‘follow’ @SMUSwimmingM on Twitter.
