Mustangs Suffer 3-2 Setback to No. 13 Stanford in Double Overtime Thriller
Cichero Equalizes In The 87th Minute To Send Match Into Double Overtime

Sept. 13, 2015

DALLAS (SMU) - Freshman Christian Boorom and sophomore Mauro Cichero each tallied a goal in the SMU men's soccer team's loss to No. 13 Stanford Sunday night at Westcott Field.

Stanford (5-1) opened the action up in the 10th minute of play, as senior Brandon Vincent found the back of the net on a penalty kick to put the Cardinal up 1-0.

In the second half, Stanford went up 2-0 in the 46th minute after Jordan Morris punched it in off a cross from his teammate, Eric Verso.

The lead didn't last long as SMU (2-2-2) freshman Boorom tallied his first collegiate goal and put the Mustangs on the board in the 61st minute to set the score at 2-1. Boorom's goal came after teammate Brenden Lee dribbled around three Stanford defenders and crossed it into a waiting Boorom six feet out from the goal.

In the 87th minute, Cichero scored the equalizer to even the score at 2-2 and eventually pushed the match into overtime. Cichero struck the ball perfectly off a 25 yard free kick and placed it in the upper right hand corner of the goal.

"I'm happy they fought back but we gave way too much respect in the first half," Head Coach Kevin Hudson said. "We played way too timid and fearful of the name on their shirt. We're going to take the next step in the development of the group and we need to grow from it."

The match went into extra time, which consisted of two 10-minute halves. However, Stanford found the golden goal in the 108th minute after Cardinal midfielder Verso shot the ball into the lower right hand corner passed the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Michael Nelson.

The 108-minute, double overtime affair featured a total of 23 shots and eight corner kicks. Cichero led the way for the Mustangs with four shots and Jared Rice, Bryce Clark and Boorom added a shot of their own.

Mustang goalkeeper Nelson and Stanford goalkeeper Andrew Epstein each tallied two saves apiece.

Up next, SMU hosts Houston Baptist on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. CT and UC Irvine on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at Westcott Field.

"We're going to turn the page and we'll review this and analyze what we've done poorly and what we've done well," Hudson said. "Ultimately, the college season is short and if we sit back and feel sorry for ourselves with a loss to a good team and we don't bounce back against Houston Baptist, we're not doing our job the right way."
