From SMUMustangs.com:

Mustangs Blank UC Irvine, 2-0

Sept. 20, 2015

DALLAS (SMU) – Goals from freshmen Christian Boorom and Emil Cuello propelled the SMU men’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over UC Irvine on Sunday evening at Westcott Field.

The Mustangs (4-2-2) have now won two of their last three matches and sit at 3-1-1 in matches on the Hilltop. With the loss, UC Irvine fell to 1-4-2 on the season.

Cuello, a freshman from Orem, Utah, scored what proved to be the match winner in the 40th minute after he headed the ball in off a cross from teammate Mauro Cichero. The goal was Cuello’s second of the season and the assist was Cichero’s fourth of the season.

The Mustang’s insurance goal came in the 62nd minute after Boorom split two defenders and received a long pass from Cuello. Boorom drilled the ball into the lower right corner of the goal past the UC Irvine goalkeeper, Michael Breslin.

“It was a really good win,” head coach Kevin Hudson said. “We were well prepared and aware of what they could bring and I was happy with the team’s performance and the way they managed the game. I was also happy to see that we kept playing in the second half even being up 2-0, we continued to create chances without putting too much at risk.”

The Anteaters edged the Mustangs in shots, 13-9, but SMU led UCI in shots on goal, 7-4.

The shutout was SMU goalkeeper Michael Nelson’s third of the year and lowered his goals-against average to 1.27. Nelson was only forced to make four saves for the Mustangs tonight while UCI’s Breslin tallied five.

The Ponies are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 26 as they head to Tulsa, Oklahoma to take on Tulsa in their first American Athletic Conference test of 2015. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT.

“We’re in a decent spot heading to Tulsa,” Hudson said. “Everybody wishes they had a few more victories under their belt but we have a group that is healthy and growing. Tulsa is always a big game and we’ll go with the intention to take free points and start the conference out right.”
