Acker and Heise Sweep The American Weekly Awards
Mustangs open conference play at Houston Friday, at Tulane Sunday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU) – SMU swept the American Athletic Conference volleyball weekly awards, with Avery Acker named Offensive Player of the Week and Morgan Heise named Defensive Player of the Week after leading to Mustangs to a 3-0 record and the DoubleTree Invitational championship.
Acker was named MVP of the tournament, which included wins over Clemson, TCU and UTSA, after averaging 13.92 assists per set while directing the Mustangs to a .287 attack percentage for the weekend. The senior set a conference record with 67 assists against TCU, and had 61 in a four-set victory over UTSA.
A native of Poth, Texas, Acker assisted five Mustangs to double-digit kills against TCU, and SMU had a .404 attack percentage against Clemson, fifth highest in a match at SMU all-time. She also recorded two double-doubles on the weekend, recording 39 digs in three matches, taking her season total to eight.
Morgan Heise was named Best Libero of the DoubleTree Invitational, finishing with 5.67 digs per set, and recorded 34 against TCU, which is tied for second highest in the conference this season. Her 36 against Arizona leads The American. The Hempstead, Texas, native also had 13 assists during the tournament.
This is the second straight Offensive Player of the Week award for Acker and fourth of her career. This is the sixth Defensive Player of the Week award of Heise’s career and second of the season.
The Mustangs begin American Athletic Conference play at Houston Friday at 7 p.m. SMU concludes the first weekend of conference action Sunday at Tulane at 12 p.m.
