Rice Named Defensive Player of the Week
Sophomore Leads Team In Assists With Six

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (American/SMU) - Sophomore Jared Rice was named the American Athletic Conference men’s soccer Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in a 1-0 victory over rival Tulsa this weekend. The Mustangs improved to 5-2-2 on the season.
The Plano, Texas, native registered his team-leading fifth assist of the season on teammate Brenden Lee’s goal in the sixth minute of the match. In the 1-0 victory, Rice was part of the back line that only allowed three shots on goal, giving SMU its fourth shutout of the season.
Lee was also named to the weekly honor roll for his game-winning goal against the Golden Hurricane. The redshirt junior tallied three shots with all three on goal.
This is the third conference player of the week award of the year for the Mustangs with freshman Emil Cuello earning Rookie of the Week on Sept. 21 and sophomore Mauro Cichero earning Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 7.
The Mustangs lead the conference in shots (132) and are tied for first in assists (18), shutouts (4) and assists per game (2).
