Men's golf in front entering final round at Erin Hills
Townsend, Smotherman Both Tied For Sixth

ERIN, Wis. (SMU) - The SMU men's golf team maintained its first place lead shooting even-par (288) during the second round at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate at Erin Hills Golf Course, Monday. The Mustangs have carded a total score of 568 (-8) through two rounds of play and hold a 4-stroke lead over second-place, Oklahoma State.
"The course played a bit tougher today, so I am happy with our round," said Head Coach Jason Enloe. "I wish we could have finished a bit stronger, but hopefully we will save our great finish for tomorrow."
Gray Townsend impressed the field with a strong showing and led the Mustangs in round two, posting a 4-under-par (68) second round. The sophomore played seven holes under-par and is currently tied for sixth (-3) after moving up 17 positions of the leaderboard. Townsend's round included six birdies and an eagle.
After shooting 3-under in the first round, senior Austin Smotherman joins Townsend on the leaderboard tied for sixth after shooting an even-par (72) in round two. Junior Alex Higgs finished Monday with a 1-over 73, bringing his two-day score to an even 144. Higgs is currently tied for 15th.
Andrew Buchanan and Ryan Burgess finished 6-over and 3-over, respectively. Buchanan, who led after round one, currently sits tied for 18th (+1, 145), while Burgess is tied for 54th at10-over (154).
"The guys are all fighting hard for the team and we are excited to have a chance to win the event tomorrow," said Enloe.
The Mustangs look to knock off top-ranked Oklahoma State and UCLA tomorrow, as the Erin Hills Intercollegiate will conclude Tuesday. First tee off of the round is slated for 8:30 a.m. Live results can be found at golfstat.com. Full results and recap from the day will be posted at SMUMustangs.com.
