Cichero Earns National Honor; Nelson Picks Up Conference Accolades

DALLAS (SMU) – Sophomore Mauro Cichero was named the College Soccer News National Player of the Week after scoring a goal in the Mustangs' 3-1 victory over Memphis and the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Connecticut.
SMU sits at No. 19 in the College Soccer News Top 30 National Poll. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) rankings will come out Tuesday.
After recording his fifth shutout of the season in a 1-0 victory over Connecticut last week, goalkeeper Michael Nelson was honored by the league as the American Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Week.
In matches against Memphis and Connecticut, the Katy, Texas, native racked up a total of seven saves and led the Mustangs to their seventh straight victory. Nelson has 42 saves this season and is sporting a 1.03 goals-against-average with a .750 save percentage.
The award is the Mustangs’ sixth player of the week award of the season with Cichero earning Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 5 and Sept. 7, Emil Cuello earning Rookie of the Week on Oct. 5 and Sept. 21 and Jared Rice earning Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 28.
The Ponies are back in action on Saturday as they take on Cincinnati at Gettler Stadium at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT.
