Women's Soccer Falls In Overtime To UCF
SMU is back in action Sunday against USF at 1 p.m. at Westcott Field

DALLAS (SMU) - Mustang defender Haley Thompson scored her first career goal in the SMU women's soccer team's 2-1 overtime loss to UCF on Thursday at Westcott Field.
In the 78th minute, Thompson was in the right spot as a failed clearance off a corner kick went right to her in the box and she took a hard low shot that went to the right of the outstretched goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
The Mustangs (5-7-3, 2-3-1 AAC) had their chance to take the lead in the 80th minute when Claire Oates headed a corner kick off of the post, and SMU was unable to get a shot off the deflection.
"When you play a team like this, you're not going to get a lot of chances and when you get them, you have to put them away," Petrucelli said. "We missed a couple that probably would have made a difference."
Freshman Blair Thorpe earned her fourth start of the season for SMU and made an impact on the field as a midfielder on the wing.
"She does bring a level of athleticism that we don't have," Petrucelli said about Thorpe. "She has the ability to run at people, she has good speed and she's a physical presence as well."
Shannon Moroney made six saves in goal, including a diving stop in the first half to keep the match scoreless. The senior now has a season-high 50 saves.
UCF's Kayla Adamek broke open the scoring in the 70th minute to give the Knights (9-5-1, 4-3-0 AAC) the early lead. In the first overtime, the Knight's Carol Rodrigues scored the game-winner, her tenth goal of the season.
"We talked a good deal about (Rodrigues) this week," Petrucelli said. "I thought (Taylor Jackson) in particular was really physical with her and made it difficult for her."
Petrucelli said the team played well enough to win this game.
"We played hard, you know, we competed hard," Petrucelli said. "They're a good team obviously and they have had good success, and we battled with them the whole time."
The Mustangs will be back in action on Sunday when they face USF at 1 p.m. at Westcott Field. It will be senior day as Brooke O'Hare, Lissi Lonsberry, Gabrielle Petrucelli and Moroney play their final home regular season match for SMU.
