DALLAS (SMU) – Freshman Christian Boorom scored the game-winning goal with 23 seconds left in the game to lead the top-seeded SMU men’s soccer team over the No. 8 seed Cincinnati, 2-1, on Saturday evening at Westcott Field. With the win, the Mustangs improved to 13-2-3 overall, 7-0-1 in league play, while Cincinnati finished the 2015 season with a 7-9-3 overall record, 1-5-3 in The American.
The Mustangs’ goals came from Brenden Lee and Christian Boorom in the second half of the match. In the 58th minute, Lee received a cross from Jared Rice and punched it in from six yards out. The goal was Lee’s fifth of the season and the assist was Rice’s 10th.
With 28 seconds left in the game, freshman Boorom scored the game-winning goal after an Idi Camara shot deflected off Cincinnati’s goalkeeper and Boorom was there for the follow up.
Cincinnati’s lone goal came in the 23rd minute after Terence Carter got his head on a cross from Nick Melville. It was the first goal the Mustangs have given up since their 2-2 draw against USF on Oct. 24.
SMU outshot the Bearcats 20-8 overall, Camara leading the team with six, Lee and Boorom behind him with four and Kevin Meinecke adding two of his own. Of the 20 shots, five were on goal, which forced Cincinnati goalkeeper Pedro Diaz to make three saves for the Bearcats.
In the net for the Mustangs, goalkeeper Michael Nelson recorded three saves of the four shots on goal he faced.
SMU moves on to face the No. 4-seed, Tulsa, at 3:30 p.m. CT on Friday in Tampa, Florida, for the American Athletic Conference semifinals. The Mustangs are 2-0 against Tulsa in 2015.
“It’s another game against a team we know really well and they know us,†Head Coach Kevin Hudson said. “They’re a very good team and it’s always a thrilling game playing them. It’s a good match up and it sets up for a good semifinal.â€
