Nov. 9, 2015

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (American/SMU) – Morgan Heise has been named American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the fifth time this season after recording 51 digs, averaging 7.29 per set. The junior led SMU to a pair of road wins to stretch the win streak to 13 matches.

A native of Hempstead, Texas, Heise finished with 32 digs in a 3-1 win at Memphis, tied for 10th in a match all-time at SMU, eclipsing 30 digs for the third time this season. She also had 19 digs in a 3-0 win at Cincinnati, helping SMU remain unbeaten all-time against the Bearcats and knocking them out of a tie for second place in the conference.

Heise has 1,587 career digs, needing just two to pass Kathryn Wilkerson for third all-time at SMU. She has 555 digs this season, and ranks in the top five nationally with a league-best 5.97 digs per set. As a team, SMU is holding opponents to a .146 attack percentage, lowest in the league and in the top 10 in the country.

Cailin Bula was also named to the weekly Honor Roll, scoring a team-high 12 kills with a .345 attack percentage against Memphis and finishing with seven kills at Cincinnati. The senior was named conference Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 5.

SMU returns to Moody Coliseum Friday night to host Tulane at 7 p.m., after playing its last four matches on the road. The Mustangs also face Houston Sunday at 1 p.m. SMU can clinch at least a share of the American Athletic Conference championship with a pair of wins this weekend.
